There was so much beauty

When you first step onto the Island of Icy Straight Point, in Alaska. The first thing you notice is the beauty of the trees surrounded by the sea. You see the gondola that will take you to the top of the mountain where you can get lots of pictures that will sure to fill your memories with.

The beauty surrounded by sea is evident at every turn as far as your eyes can see there are trees with their leaves gently rustling in a gentle breeze while they wait for snowfall which will come soon enough to keep them company all through wintertime and into springtime when new life begins anew again.

We weren’t supposed to be here

Going to Icy Straight Point was a great decision. NCL said they weren’t scheduled for us to stop there, but with some rockslides happening and deemed too dangerous by NCL, to stop in Skagway. It turned out that we had to change destinations and stop at Icy Straight Point. Mile-long zipline Alaska sounds exciting.

First things first

How are we going to get to the top of that mountain? Do we have to hike the mile-long trail to get up to the zip lining in Alaska?

Not at all, they had 2 sets of gondolas that will take you to the top of the mountain. The green, and the red. The green one takes you about halfway up the mountain where you can take pictures if you’re not wanting to go all the way to the top.

For you thrill seekers, you’ll take the red and that ride was scarier in my opinion than the zip lining in Alaska itself. It goes straight up the mountain to get you to your destination.

What now?

Well, you’re now on top of the mountain. Time to go check in with the ones running the zip lining in Alaska. You will wait until they call your group of about 20 people. We had 1 group ahead of us so we had to wait about 30-40 minutes. They then called our group and gave us instructions on what to do. They told us that we need to walk down the hill for about ¼ of a mile until we reached our destination.

Strap us in

Now it’s starting to get real. You see the group ahead of you just finishing up with the last few thrill seekers. I was at the front of the line of our group so I didn’t have to wait long. Each time the zip lining in Alaska took off, would carry 6 people at a time. For the group that was waiting, they had a special perch that we could stand on and watch the group ahead of us going down the mountain.

So the chairs make their way back up the mountain, they tell you what number to go to and there’s no time wasted and they have you in the chair and strapped in tight.

OK, time for me to make a few checks. My go pro turned on and secured? Check. Goggles on so my glasses don’t fall off? Check. OK, let’s do this!

In 3, 2, 1

They pull the cord and release you. Oh wow, look at the scenery as your gliding down the mountain. My wife is next to me and zips right past me with her arms and feet flailing around like an octopus.

Yes, they tell you that to keep straight you need to put your arms and legs out. If you start to turn left, then you want to put your right arm and leg out to straighten out. And vice verca if you’re turning right. My wife couldn’t keep straight so she just kept putting her arms and legs out. I get a chuckle everytime I watch the video.

This may not be for everyone

But it was perfect for me. I’m soo happy that my wife and I chose to do this. Let me give you a little history. My wife is scared of heights but a couple of years ago we were in Honduras and I wanted to go zip lining and to make me happy she said she would do it. She got past her fears and now that’s our thing that we like to do. I’m so proud of her.
